Rolling Stone 4 Star Album review for ‘WORD GOT OUT’, with BOB DYLAN on the front!!
Performing live on Radio National awesome ‘Inside Sleeve’ program with the wonderous Paul Gough.
“Darren Cross tried on a lot of different hats during his time with indie-rockers Gerling; lo-fi pop, caterwauling punk, propulsive dance and even a song with Kylie. Which makes it all the more refreshing to hear him delivering a collection of songs that are single-minded in their intent. Word Got Out, the first album from this project with singer Jessica Cassar, falls confidently into a gothic folk mould, with the duo’s very different vocals building huge mountains of sound over a sparse bed of acoustic guitar and the odd distant cymbal crash. Non-Americans rarely do this type of thing well, but Jep and Dep, like Bonnie “Prince” Billy or 16 Horsepower, sound like genuine hillbillies”
Thanks Rolling Stone, this is bloody awesome.
Sydney folk, you can catch us live at The Midnight Special this Sunday 30th November for our last Sydney show of the year. From 7pm.
Great news- our debut album WORD GOT OUT just got a 4 out of 5 in the Sydney Morning Herald by renowned music writer Jeff Apter. We get compared to Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue and Lee and Nancy, “Come on like folk-noir variations on Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue’s classic Where the Wild Roses Grow”.
Jep and Dep
WORD GOT OUT 4 stars
Way back in the late 1960s, long before the rule of Kim and Kanye, there was another dynamic duo named Lee (as in Hazlewood) and Nancy (Sinatra), who sang the soulful country blues. Lee and Nancy are clearly a touchstone for Jep and Dep, the latest from Gerling’s Darren Cross, now in cahoots with doe-eyed Sydney chanteuse Jessica Cassar. Recorded live in a touch under two hours, but no less well crafted because of it, these are the type of deep, dark laments best suited to the wee small hours, ideally taken with a not-so-wee-sized glass of something strong. The defiantly downbeat mood of standouts Cut All Ties, Tears in the Rain and Granted come on like folk-noir variations on Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue’s classic Where the Wild Roses Grow, ballads with the right balance of creeping menace and painful regret. WELL HERE IT IS.
OUR DEBUT ALBUM.
WORD GOT OUT.
This album is very special to us and we cant wait for you to hear it. It’s the product of late nights, cheap flights, small fights, much love, highway food, Berlin romance, troubadour tears and a lot of hard work!
GRAB A PHYSICAL COPY ON BANDCAMP AND AT OUR SHOWS“This is a beautifully presented dark, soaring and occasionally haunting alt-country number from Sydney’s Jep And Dep. Perhaps the best thing about it is they’ve managed to include the tropes of their chosen genre that make it so alluring without compromising their identity. That is to say, they’re not pretending to be a murderous couple from the American south circa-1949. This unaffected approach is rarer than it should be in the so-called folk-noir genre – it’s easier to make imitation sound good – so ‘Granted’ is a very welcome new track” – Double J on “Granted” “Sydney duo Jep and Dep show some lovely flair for atmospheric country sounds on their debut album “Word Got Out”, their songs ringing with a sweet intimacy and more than a touch of the dark side of life…”– 2ser Radio “The Sydney duo write music for now in a style that is both contemporary and nostalgic…” – Denver Maxx, Beat Magazine “The country duet is often maligned. Done with the right intent – as here, with minimal distraction from the central conversations – the emotions are front and centre, the simplicity sharpening the focus. Despite the relative youth of the names on the marquee, we’re talking early Johnny Cash and June Carter here, rather than Kenny and Dolly. Darren Cross’ almost-croon and strummed guitar makes for good contrast with Jessica Cassar’s sometimes bell-like lamentations. Babe Come Down’s distant cymbal splash, or My Man’s banjo, just underscore the love – or love gone wrong …” – Ross McClelland, The Music.
TONIGHT WE LAUNCH WORD GOT OUT IN SYDNEY at DJANGO BAR, MARRICKVILLE FROM 8PM.
